The broad spectrum of disciplines present in UCG, the excellent opportunities for collaborating with strategic partners and the flexibility of Utrecht University's Bachelor/Master system combine to create outstanding opportunities for innovative and integrating teaching that transcends traditional boundaries. This will enable UCG to evolve into a leading centre in the Netherlands (and, possibly, in Europe) for generating, transferring and applying earth science knowledge; a centre that will attract gifted students and staff from abroad.

Other education activities

UCG intends to offer a separate MSc in Earth, Climate and Environment , which has a strong research component. And in the context of the transfer of multidisciplinary knowledge there are plans for multidisciplinary lectures for MSc students that transcend the boundaries of individual disciplines (one possible topic is natural hazards). There are also plans to hold special UCG seminars in which invited speakers (possibly from abroad) give a multidisciplinary presentation.

Specialised research schools

The PhD teaching in geoscience at Utrecht can count on input from a large number of specialised research schools in which Utrecht is either managing the accounts or is a partner:

• The "top research school" (bonus incentive scheme) Netherlands Research Centre for Integrated Solid Earth Science  (ISES), which has as its aim: "Understanding the Solid Earth as a dynamic system: A prerequisite for responding to basic needs of humanity on a vulnerable Earth".
• The geodynamic research of the Vening Meinesz Research School of Geodynamics (VMSG ) addresses the solid Earth, considering the latter as an integral part of the full System Earth, and including the interfaces with the outer components of planet Earth.
• Buys Ballot Research School: A School for the study of fundamental processes in the climate system
• The Netherlands Research School of Sedimentary Geology (NSG). The purpose of NSG is to promote the understanding of process-oriented aspects of the planet Earth and its impact on energy and environmental issues. This requires an integrated approach across the earth science disciplines.
• Centre for Geo-ecological Research (ICG).
• The Sense Research School for Socio-Economic and Natural Sciences of the Environment
